The lexical meaning of segregation is separation or disintegration, whereas in terms of sector terminology, it is the disintegration of the material that forms the concrete resulting in the concrete to lose its uniformity. In such a case, aggregates and the cement paste in a segregated concrete do not move together during concrete casting. The cement paste, which is fluidal, spreads over a larger area, whereas aggregates predominantly accumulate at the location, where the concrete is poured.
Segregation not only leads to a bad appearance in the reinforced concrete constructional component but also significantly reduces the cross-sectional performance. Segregation may occur as a result of any errors made during mixing, transporting, placing and compacting of fresh concrete.
